Equality, Diversity, and Inclusion (EDI) Policy

1. Policy Statement

Our practice is committed to providing high-quality eye care that is accessible, inclusive, and respectful to everyone. We recognize that our patients and staff come from diverse backgrounds, and we value the enrichment this brings to our community. We aim to ensure that no individual is treated less favorably on the grounds of:

  • Age
  • Disability (including neurodiversity and visual impairment)
  • Gender reassignment
  • Marriage and civil partnership
  • Pregnancy and maternity
  • Race (including color, nationality, and ethnic or national origin)
  • Religion or belief
  • Sex and Sexual orientation
  • Welsh Language preference

2. Our Commitments

To turn these values into action, our practice commits to the following:

  • Clinical Care: We will provide equal access to eye examinations and treatments, making “reasonable adjustments” for patients with physical disabilities or cognitive needs.
  • The Welsh Language: In accordance with the spirit of the Welsh Language (Wales) Measure 2011, we respect the right of patients to communicate in Welsh. We will endeavor to provide bilingual signage and, where possible, offer consultations in Welsh if requested.
  • Inclusive Environment: Our practice will be a “safe space.” We have zero tolerance for bullying, harassment, or discrimination—whether directed at staff by patients, or vice versa.
  • Recruitment: We hire based on merit. We actively encourage applications from underrepresented groups in the optometry profession.

3. Patient Accessibility

We recognize that as a healthcare practice, we serve many patients with sensory loss. We adhere to the Accessible Information Standard by:

  1. Offering appointment reminders in preferred formats (e.g., large print, phone calls, or email).
  2. Utilizing translation services or visual aids for patients where English or Welsh is not their first language.

4. Staff Responsibilities

Every member of the team is responsible for upholding this policy.

  • Training: All staff will undergo periodic EDI training to recognize unconscious bias and understand the specific needs of our local Welsh community.
  • Reporting: Any employee who witnesses discriminatory behaviour is encouraged to report it to the Practice Manager without fear of victimization.

5. Monitoring and Review

This policy is a “living document.” It will be reviewed annually to ensure it reflects current Welsh legislation and the evolving needs of our patient base.

Note: This policy applies to all aspects of the practice, including clinical decision-making, frame styling/dispensing, and third-party supplier interactions.
