Frequently Asked Questions

General

How often should I have my ears cleared?

This varies from person to person. Some people naturally produce more wax and may benefit from a “hygiene check” every 6 to 12 months, while others may only need it once every few years.

How long does the appointment take?

It usually takes between 20 and 30 minutes. This includes a brief consultation, an initial examination of both ears, and the gentle removal of the wax.

What if you find an infection or a perforated eardrum?

As trained professionals, we will examine your ears thoroughly before starting. If we spot signs of an active infection or a perforation that requires medical attention, we will advise you on the best course of action and, if necessary, refer you to your GP.

Should I use ear drops before my appointment?

Yes, it is highly recommended. Using olive oil ear drops twice a day for 2 to 3 days before your appointment softens the wax, making the removal process much smoother and more comfortable for you.

Micro-Suction

Does micro-suction hurt?

Not at all. Microsuction is a non-invasive procedure. You may feel a slight tugging sensation as the wax is removed, and it can be a bit noisy (similar to a small vacuum cleaner), but it is generally quick and painless.

Is it safer than ear syringing?

Yes. Traditional syringing involves pushing water into the ear, which can sometimes cause pressure issues or infections. Micro-suction is a “dry” technique performed under constant observation, making it the safest method for removing ear wax, especially for those with sensitive ears or past surgeries.

Can I have micro-suction if I have a perforated eardrum?

Yes. This is one of the main advantages of micro-suction. Because we don’t use water or pressure, it is the only method safe for individuals with a history of perforated eardrums or mastoid cavities.

Warm Water Irrigation

What is warm water irrigation?

Water irrigation is a modern, effective method of clearing ear wax. We use a specialized electronic irrigator that pulses a gentle, controlled stream of lukewarm water into the ear canal. This flow washes around the wax, softening it and encouraging it to slide out naturally.

Is this the same as “ear syringing”?

Not quite. Old-fashioned syringing used a manual metal syringe that could apply too much pressure. At The Hearing Hygienist, I use a modern electronic system that regulates the pressure to a safe, comfortable level, making it a much more sophisticated and gentle experience.

Does it hurt?

No, the procedure should be completely painless. Most clients find the feeling of the warm water quite soothing. If you feel any discomfort or if the water feels too warm/cool, just let me know and I can adjust the flow immediately.

Why is the water warm?

We use water heated to body temperature (37°C). This ensures the procedure is comfortable and prevents “caloric vertigo” (dizziness), which can happen if the water is too hot or too cold for the inner ear.

How should I prepare for my appointment?

For irrigation to be most effective, it is essential to use olive oil ear drops for 3 to 5 days prior to your visit. This softens the wax, allowing the water to get behind it and flush it out easily. Without drops, the wax may be too hard to remove in one session.

Who should NOT have water irrigation?

While very safe, irrigation isn’t suitable for everyone. You should opt for micro-suction instead if you have:

A known perforated eardrum.
A history of recent ear surgery.

Will I feel “blocked” after the procedure?

You may have a small amount of residual moisture in the ear immediately after, but I will gently dry the outer ear for you. Most clients feel an instant sense of clarity and improved hearing as soon as the blockage is cleared.
